No. 8 Jennies Fall to No. 15 Emporia State in Double Overtime Sunday

EMPORIA, Kan. -- No. 8 University of Central Missouri Jennies soccer saw its 11-match unbeaten streak come to an end after falling to the No. 15-ranked Emporia State Hornets, 4-3, in double overtime Sunday, Oct. 24, at ESU Soccer Pitch.

The Jennies (13-2-1, 7-1-1 MIAA) are scheduled to host a pair of MIAA home matches at the South Recreation Complex to finish out the regular season, starting with Missouri Southern on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. before welcoming Missouri Western for Senior Day Sunday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m.

Sydney Leslie (2) and Caroline Cole scored UCM's three goals in the match.

After Emporia State (14-1-1, 8-1-0 MIAA) gained a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 22nd-minute, Central Missouri equalized 10 minutes later when Leslie netted a goal off a free kick.

Neither team scored the remainder of the first half, sending both teams into halftime all square, 1-1.

The Jennies took a 2-1 lead eight minutes out of halftime in the 53rd-minute after Cole fired a shot from just outside the box into the back of the net.

Leslie scored her second goal of the match and increased the UCM advantage to 3-1 in the 62nd-minute when her free-kick deflected off an Emporia State player into the goal.

The Hornets answered, however, and trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a goal in the 67th-minute, before evening the match, 3-3, with a goal with just 4.3 seconds remaining in the second half, sending the match to overtime.

Both UCM and Emporia State did not score in the first extra time period, sending the contest to a final, 10-minute overtime period.

The Hornets got their match-winner in the 106th-minute off a corner kick for the 4-3 final score.

With her two goals, Leslie upped her season goal tally to nine, while Cole advanced her 2021 tally to five.

UCM goalkeeper Lindsey Johnson suffered the loss between the posts after making eight saves but allowing all four goals in 106-plus minutes.

Aislinn Hughes netted the goal that sent the match to overtime, as well as the game-winner in double overtime while tallying five shots and three shots on goal, pacing the Hornets.

ESU goalkeeper Jillian Patton earned the victory after giving up three goals and making two saves in 106-plus minutes.
