(BISMARCK, N.D.) – Seventh-ranked Jennies soccer (3-0-0) used a commanding 8-1 advantage in shots on goal and stifling defense to post a 1-0 shutout victory over the University of Mary (1-1-0) on a mild Thursday night at the Community Bowl in Bismarck.
The Jennies and Marauders battled for the first 45-minutes, with both goalkeepers being tested. Jennies freshman goalie
Morgan Hartzler made a crucial save in the 22
nd minute of the first half, which turned out to be the only save of the match for Central Missouri. University of Mary's Emily Christensen broke away down the left side of the field and blasted a shot toward the net. Hartzler made a perfect clean save to keep the match leveled at zero.
The Jennies outshot the Marauders 6-2 in the first period, but could not find the back of the net, largely in part due to University of Mary goalkeeper Ashley Akers, who had three of her match-high seven saves in the first period.
Central Missouri came out of the half and struck almost instantaneously to take a 1-0 lead. Just four minutes into the final period, Jennies junior midfielder
Becky Lackey sprinted down the left side of the field and controlled a perfectly placed pass from senior forward
Aaryn Burke at the top of the goal box and hammered it into the back of the net for her team-high third goal.
Lackey's 49
th minute strike proved to be the game-winner, as Mary could not find an equalizer in the final 41 minutes, improving the Jennies to 3-0-0 on the season.
The Jennies outshot the Marauders 14-5 in the match, including an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Central Missouri treks north to Minot, N.D. Saturday for a match with Minot State (2-1-0). First-kick is set for noon at Herb Parker Stadium.
