(DURANT, Okla.) – University of Central Missouri Jennies' softball moved to 5-0 overall for the first time since the 2006 season Sunday morning, defeating Texas Permian-Basin 6-3 then claiming a 4-3 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State to complete the Jennies weekend in Durant, Oklahoma.
Game 1: Central Missouri 6, Texas Permian-Basin 3
The Jennies woke up early to play Texas Permian-Basin at 9 a.m. in the first of two games Sunday. The early morning start didn't seem to affect the Jennies, as they posted a 6-3 win over the Falcons.
Central Missouri didn't waste any time scoring to start the contest. The Jennies made it 1-0 in the top of the first when
Katie Groves (Bluffdale, Utah) executed a sacrifice bunt to score
Braylyn Bivens (Kansas City, Mo.).
The Jennies then put two more runs on the board the very next inning when
Alex Groeger (Fort Collins, Colo.) flied out to left field with a sacrifice fly ball, scoring
Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.) and Bivens singled up the middle of the field to score
Ashlea Bengtson (Wichita, Kan.).
Texas Permian-Basin didn't go quietly though. The Falcons put together a three-run second inning to tie the game up at three heading into the third inning.
Central Missouri wasted no time in reclaiming the lead in the third after Young singled to right centerfield to drive in
Jakki Prater (Nixa, Mo.) and put the Jennies back up, 4-3.
UCM added two more runs in the sixth inning when Groves again placed a sacrifice bunt in perfect position to score Groeger. Bivens scored the final run for Central Missouri on a wild pitch by the Falcons.
Freshman
Jakki Prater pitched four innings, allowing three runs while striking out three to pick up her first win of her collegiate career while fellow freshman
Katie Shockley (Crocker, Mo.) provided three innings of relief pitching to pick up her first collegiate save.
Game 2: Central Missouri 4, Southeastern Oklahoma State 3
Central Missouri ended its weekend in Durant, Oklahoma with a hard fought 4-3 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State late Sunday morning to move to 5-0 on the season.
The Jennies fell behind in the bottom of the second inning when the Savage Storm scored three runs to make it 3-0.
Central Missouri didn't panic though and got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Bivens singled through the left side of the field allowing
Medora West (St. Louis, Mo.) to advance to third base. Bivens was then caught stealing but West was able to cross home plate to make it 3-1 Southeastern Oklahoma.
The Jennies tied the game up in the top of the fifth after Groeger hit her first ever homerun to drive in Bengtson and make it 3-3.
Central Missouri took the lead the very next inning when Young hit her second homerun of the season and weekend, making it 4-3 Jennies.
After picking up her first save as a Jennie in the first game of the day against Texas Permian-Basin,
Katie Shockley pitched two innings to snag her first win while junior pitcher
Megan Schallom (St. Louis, Mo.) pitched an inning in relief and notched her first save of the season.
The Jennies are idle until next Friday when they travel to Denton, Texas to take part in the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling Tournament hosted by Texas Woman's University. Central Missouri will play Abilene Christian in the opener at noon Friday.
